Opole - My Town![]() From time immemorial here in Opole have been crossing communikation routes, leads from East to the West and from South to the North and because of this Opole was mentioned in the Baviarian Geographer. Since 13th century the seat of an independent Silesian duke; a town since 1217, a vassal of the Czech kingdom since 1327, passed to Austria in 1527 and to Prussia in 1740. German name: Oppeln. In Opole leave 130 thousand inhabitants, occupy area 96 km2. The highest point in city is terrain (176m sbowe sea level) 'Matki Boskiej Bolesnej' church and St. Wojciech church which is called 'Church on The Hill' . Opole is the city where is 668 streets and total lenght of this streets is almost 300 km, which are lighted up in a night by 7 thousands of street lamps. In the town are almost 1800 of shops, 43 petrol stations and in many of hotels you can found 595 beds where you can take a sleep. Opole is the regional capital. In April 1997, the Euro Parliament's commission on the environment, regional planning and local government awarded Opole an "Honour Flag of the Council of Europe". This is the third highest honour after the European Prize and Honour Plaque. It is awarded by the European Parliament to local governments for their activities for European integration.
